Hello! I am very much the "noob" in all forms. We bought our first house in January and are just now getting to know the yard (it was under 3 ft of snow when we first saw it). So I'm new to the whole home ownership/yard work thing. Up until now, I've only had a little patio to garden on and I did pretty good with some potted tomatoes and a few flowers. But I've always been addicted to "junk". I come from a long line of garage salers, dumpster divers and thrift store junkies. My Grandmother owned an antique shop and my mom, aunt and I hit the local auction house weekly looking for what we call "the good stuff". I also have an aunt who is a Master Gardener and has been waiting to pass on her knowledge to me and my daughter. Now that we have a yard, we can't wait!!!
Right now we're doing a lot of clean up. I don't think the last owners did much with the yard, I don't think they even raked past October of last year. We have some trees to trim and two to come down, a lot of bad bushes that are dying to pull out and the lilacs in the back are taking over the neighborhood - which I'm fine with, but the guys that come down the alley are taking their life in their hands. There is one flowerbed in the front and I've told my 9 year old daughter that it's hers. She wants a "Fairy Garden" and she doesn't know it, but I've been collecting fairy garden stuff since we bought the house. I have little tables and chairs, toadstools, shiney things and anything Tinkerbell might want.
So, I'm very much a newbie on many levels, but I can't wait to learn. Like today, I'm going to learn how to reclaim the sidewalk and the driveway, put in some edging and plant Irish Moss in the cracks. I've always loved the little "trails" of moss running through concrete.
Okay...Off to work!!!
