    thumper broke leg

    hi yall,

i hope yall are all doing well.we have a pet rabbit named thumper we were given that was won at the fair by a family who did not want her.she was a cute little thing.she stays on our closed in front porch.mama was bringing some stuff in late saturday night after christmas and closed thumper leg in the door.i had to find a vet that would see rabbits.the two vets i use does not see rabbits but refered me to a vet that did.i took her over there monday and the leg was broke.they set it and put a splint on it and she came home the same day.she looks so funny and it looks so uncomfortable.i had her room ready for her.i always bring her in if it goes below 40 degrees.she went to the vet for a check on her leg six weeks ago on tuesday and they said she was moving around to much so i cleaned up our big dog carrier and put her in it in the livingroom so she would not be alone.four weeks ago on wensday she went for another check and they said it was healing well and to bring her back in two weeks and they are going to x-ray the leg and she may be able to get her splint off.i took her into the vet two weeks but they said she still needs to have the cast on for another two weeks but the leg is doing well.she weighed ten pounds.the vet said she was a big rabbit.i got a pic of her with her cast on..she went back to the vet two weeks ago this past wensday and they took the cast off but said she needed to stay in the carrier two more weeks.we have been letting her out the carrier for a little while each day.she weighs eleven pounds now.monday i let her out so i could clean it and let it air out some.when i put her back in she got so mad she yanked her food tray down.she can really pitch a fit sometimes.she came out of her carrier wensday and now stays in her own room at night.she has been on the porch some during the day and runs around chasing the cats when she is inside.leg is good as new.have a goodnight.

Hold on.. Vixen, did you say she runs around the house chasing cats inside? Does Thumper wear a diaper? Don't rabbits leave little round droppings as they go? How does that work to have a rabbit in the house? Just wondering over here...Surprise

    Re: thumper broke leg

    hi yall,

i was told rabbits could be litter box trained but was unable to get thumper to do it.she tried to mark a spot in each room so she stays on the porch most of the time.it is closed in where thumper and the cats are safe to run around and get some fresh air.i let her in when i have time to watch her.she has her own room to stay in when it is to hot or to cold outside for her.she loves to be petted so she has started standing up on her back legs beside us for us to pet her and when she hears a strange sound.it is cute.i got a pic.have a goodnight.

    Re: thumper broke leg

Wow, Thumper is one big bunny!  I'm so glad to see he's recovered from his broken leg.  My sister has had two pet rabbits over the past 20 years, and they both lived to be quite old.  Your rabbit sounds like and looks like he has quite a personality!  And he seems to have a great place to live on your porch.

I know what you mean, it is harder these days to find a vet who will see small pets like rabbits, hamsters or birds.  Most just treat dogs and cats, or else farm animals.  So now I have three veterinarians, one for my cat and dogs, another for our pony, and a 3rd one for my small pets who thankfully don't need medical care often.

    thanks spedigree,

i bet you stay busy.sounds like you have quite a bit of pets.i think thumper is what they call a bar mession giant.i am not sure i am spelling it right.she is using her leg like it was never broke and we make sure we are very careful when she is near the door.she has a room in the house for when it is real hot or cold.is your pony a miniature horse?have a great day.

    Re: thumper broke leg

Thumper has had quite an adventure, hasn't she!  That sure is one BIG bunny! I'm glad she got her leg fixed, and she's well again.

I got a rabbit many years ago for my kids when I thought they had outgrown the Easter basket of candy stuff.  We named here EstherBunny.  She was allowed indoors to play, but had a hutch outside, safe & secure with a roof to protect her from the weather. She was litter trained, so cleanup was easy. (although I must say the smell is worse than cat litter)  After a while the kids lost interest, & she got no attention from them, so I gave her to a family that had time for her.

    thanks pat,

thumper is doing well.she lives on the porch and she has a fan to help her with the heat.i have a room i put her in when it gets really cold in the winter.she does not seem to know her leg was ever broke.my children were already grown when i brought her home but she gets petted anytime we sit out on the porch.it is so nice to be able to sit out and enjoy the heat after the cold winter we had pass.have a goodnight.
